FSC Welcomes Sean Lane as Senior Vice President and Provost
To the Campus Community:
I am pleased to announce that Sean Lane, PhD, dean of the College of Arts, Humanities,
and Social Sciences at the University of Alabama in Huntsville, has been appointed
FSC's senior vice president and provost and will be joining us in June 2025.
In this role he will oversee all FSC’s academic units, support services, and operations,
while providing a strategic vision for enriching academic programs and enhancing teaching,
research, and the student experience.
Sean has been the dean of the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences at
the University of Alabama in Huntsville since 2018. As dean, he revamped the college's
recruitment, retention, and graduation efforts, led strategic planning, helped develop
numerous new degree programs at both undergraduate and graduate levels, created new
research support programs, engaged deeply with industry, and led significant fundraising
activities. He also served concurrently as interim dean of the Honors College and
acting associate provost for International Services, Academic Integrity, and dean
of the Graduate School. Dr. Lane previously served as associate dean of The Graduate
School at Louisiana State University where he was also on the faculty in the Department
of Psychology. With disciplinary expertise in learning, memory and decision-making,
both theoretical and applied, he also served as director of research for the Department.
Prior to his academic roles, Sean worked in the tech sector as a human factors and
user experience professional. He has a deep level of success in securing competitive
grants from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the National Science Foundation,
and the Spencer Foundation. He has been recognized for his excellence in teaching,
is author or editor of two books on memory and attention, and has a long list of peer-reviewed
publications. Dr. Lane received his PhD and MA in Experimental Psychology from Kent
State University and his BA in Psychology from California State University, Fresno.
Dr. Lane will succeed Laura Joseph, EdD, who has served as provost since 2015 and
will retire this summer after a 34-year career at FSC. I am grateful for Provost Joseph’s
agreeing to continue in her role for an additional semester to support and assist
my transition over the last year. I would also like to acknowledge and thank the search
committee, chaired by Dean Richard Vogel, PhD, for their time and dedication to ensure
a successful search, and to all members of the FSC campus community for their participation
and contributions to this process.
I know you will join me in offering him and his wife Jennifer a warm Farmingdale welcome.
