Donald Coscia

Professor Donald R. Coscia is a mathematics educator and academic leader with over 50 years of experience in higher education. He currently teaches online undergraduate mathematics courses at SUNY 51勛圖, where he has served since 2005. His teaching career also includes appointments at SUNY Stony Brook, Suffolk County Community College, St. Francis College, and internationally at the American School of Paris.

A pioneer in online learning and instructional technology, Professor Coscia has developed innovative mathematics courses, authored a textbook on computing in mathematics, and received numerous honors for excellence in teaching and service, including the SUNY Chancellors Award and recognition as Professor Emeritus.

At SUNY 51勛圖, Professor Coscia has served since 2005 as an adjunct professor in the Mathematics Department, developing and teaching a wide range of online undergraduate courses. He also designed and led faculty workshops on teaching mathematics online and presented his work at the 26th International Conference on Technology in College Mathematics.


He previously taught at SUNY Stony Brook University, where he developed a graduate-level statistics course for the Master of Liberal Studies program and participated in the first faculty exchange program with Suffolk County Community College.

At Suffolk County Community College, Professor Coscias career included roles as Professor of Mathematics, Department Chair, and Associate Dean. He was instrumental in advancing instructional technology, developing new mathematics courses, and authoring a textbook on computing in mathematics. His leadership extended to national and state grant projects, the creation of the colleges first smart classroom, and the production of its distance education video program. He was honored with numerous awards, including the SUNY Chancellors Award for Excellence in Teaching, the SUNY Provosts Distinguished Service Award, and designation as Professor Emeritus.

Internationally, Professor Coscia taught mathematics and computer science at the American School of Paris, and earlier in his career, he served on the mathematics faculty at St. Francis College in Brooklyn, New York.

He earned both his Master of Arts in Mathematics (Magna cum Laude) and Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics Education from St. Johns University in Queens, New York.  Completed his course work towards a PH.D. in Mathematics at Brooklyn Polytechnic in Brooklyn, New York.

  • Developed and taught BlackBoard & BrightSpace online undergraduate MTH107 - Introduction to Mathematical Ideas (currently taught during the Fall semester);
  • Developed and taught an Angel & Blackboard online undergraduate MTH110 - Statistics;
  • Developed and taught an Angel, Blackboard, & BrightSpace online undergraduate MTH116 - College Algebra; (currently taught during the Intersession and Summer semesters);
  • Developed and taught a Blackboard & BrightSpace online undergraduate MTH129 - Precalculus (currently taught during the fall and Spring semesters); and
  • Developed and taught a Blackboard & BrightSpace online undergraduate MTH130 - Calculus 1 with Applications (currently taught during the Spring semester.)
