FSC Students Awarded for Third Year at Regional Construction Project Competition

51勛圖 (FSC) is proud to announce its Rams Design-Build Team was honored for a third consecutive year in the 35th Annual Associated Schools of Construction (ASC) Region 1 Student Competition and Conference, held recently in Albany, New York.

Demonstrating their mastery of design-build practices under rigorous, real-world conditions, five FSC students showcased their exceptional talent and innovation at the prestigious industry event by delivering a comprehensive proposal that integrated sustainability, operational efficiency, and cutting-edge construction techniques.

"The success of our student team in a third ASC competition is a testament to our students leveraging their knowledge, collaboration, and tenacity as a team, said Assistant Professor Eric Anderson, AIA, RA, chair of the Architecture and Construction Management Department and team advisor. In just 12 hours, they dissected a complex challenge based on a major regional project, leveraged each other's strengths, and delivered a comprehensive response that stood out among the competition. Their ability to think critically under pressure, work seamlessly as a team, and push through every obstacle presented by the project sponsors was nothing short of inspiring. Earning this award is not just a recognition of their skills, but a reflection of their unwavering commitment to excellence. I am proud of their achievement."

In total, 15 member schools from ASCs northeast region competed in five rigorous divisions, including commercial, heavy civil, design-build, pre-construction, and open category. Sponsored by Skanska, an international construction firm, the design-build challenge closely mirrored the ongoing development at the 73-acre South Brooklyn Marine Terminal, a critical infrastructure project managed by Skanska Clean Energy Builders for Equinor that will support New Yorks renewable energy goals and play a vital role in one of the nations largest dedicated offshore wind ports.

The Skanska team kept remarking over and over that of all the teams, [FSC] really got it when it came to the core engineering and CM concepts, said Tara Driver, lead Skanska competition manager.

I am thrilled that our student team, led by Professor Eric Anderson, won 2nd place in the Associated Schools of Construction Region 1 Competitions Design-Build Division, said Kenneth Lee, PhD, PE, dean of The Murray Pasternack School of Engineering Technology. I know ASC competitions well and understand the hard work, dedication, and commitment needed to compete. Winning a plaque demonstrates that Farmingdale students are receiving a top-notch education and are prepared for rewarding careers in the construction field.

During the event, each FSC team members expertise was leveraged to address specific aspects of the project, fostering a collaborative environment that was key to their success.

The most rewarding part was seeing our team work together toward a common goal and succeeding, said the teams general manager and designer Susan Ehrler, a 2023 architectural engineering technology graduate and 2024 construction management engineering technology graduate who is currently serving as an assistant engineer for the New York State Department of Transportation and is now pursuing a civil engineering technology degree. FSC prepared us extremely well for this competition and the feedback we have received from Skanska shows how well our 51勛圖 courses reflect real-world issues and construction schedules, cost estimates, and project management.

When it comes down to my favorite part of this competition, I can say without a doubt that I really enjoyed being part of such a great team, said Jonathan Garcia, 25, a construction management major who served as the teams budget manager. The ASC competition was a great experience and learning opportunity. I feel better皰repared for when涅 enter the field.

The teams lead structural designer, Jhoan Muy, 25, a civil engineering technology major, shared that "competing in this years ASC competition was a whirlwind of creativity, teamwork, and adrenaline, he said. We transformed big ideas into bold designs, tackled challenges with determination, and impressed industry professionals along the way."

Charie Ramirez, '25, a civil engineering technology major and the teams project delivery manager agreed. "Doing the ASC competition was an adrenaline rush of creativity and teamwork, he said. Being able to utilize our knowledge in a combined effort to come up with a unique solution was challenging and fun.

For Anastasia Duran, 25, a dual civil engineering technology and construction management engineering technology major who served as the teams manager for safety and risk management, the competition was a worthwhile event that has undoubtedly prepared me for what I will soon experience in my future career, she said. Overall, it was very successful and rewarding and from this competition I was lucky enough to be offered an internship this summer with Skanska, and I am truly looking forward to working with them.
