Lauren Varagnolo
Majors: Bioscience and Applied Psychology
Summer Research: Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (CSHL)
Returning to Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory for a second summer, Lauren is continuing her research journey through the Undergraduate Research Program (URP), building on work she began as an intern with the Research and Mentoring Program (RAM).
Research is the forefront of learning in academia, Lauren says. It teaches students the value of answering questions and working hard to contribute to your field.
With three years of research experience spanning biology, psychology, and neuroscience, Lauren is focused this summer on refining her research protocol and deepening her expertise. She credits both her campus and off-campus experiences with shaping her intellectually and personally.

Joshua Narine
Joshua Narine
Major: Mechanical Engineering Technology
Summer Research: University of Utah
Joshua will spend his summer as a mentee under Dr. Samira Siri, conducting research that investigates the complex interactions between oil spills and microplastics using high throughput experimentation.
Im looking forward to conducting research in my intended field, Joshua says. Hopefully in the future, this experience will be handy.
His work not only contributes to critical environmental science but also aligns with his broader career goals in engineering and innovation.

Jecenya Tapia Cabrera
Jecenya Tapia Cabrera
Major: Science, Technology & Society (STS) / Biology
Summer Research: Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory
Jecenya joins the lab of Dr. Doreen Ware to study plant genome evolution and its implications for agriculture. Her summer work includes performing qPCR experiments and participating in field research, giving her a robust, hands-on experience in genetics and plant biology.
This opportunity allows Jecenya to merge her interests in biology and societal impact, exploring how fundamental research can inform sustainable agricultural practices.

These students represent the very best of what curiosity, commitment, and a love of learning can achieve. We are proud to see them apply their talents and passion in research labs this summer and cant wait to see the impact theyll make.
Congratulations, Lauren, Joshua, and Jecenyawere cheering you on!
