Financial Aid - Frequently Asked Questions

FAQ

Do I need to be admitted before I can apply for financial aid at Farmingdale?

No. You can apply for financial aid as early as October 1st of each year. The 2026-27 FAFSA is now available. However, to receive a complete Financial Aid package and actually receive funds, you must be admitted and enrolled at the College.

Do I have to reapply for financial aid every year?

Yes. The FAFSA application is available every year. If your financial circumstances change, you may get more or less aid. After your first year you can renew your FAFSA online.

How do I apply for a Pell Grant and other types of need-based aid?

Submit a FAFSA. In order to receive Federal College Work-Study, please note as a new student you will receive a survey regarding your interest in the program.

If I take a leave of absence, do I have to start repaying my loans?

Not immediately. The subsidized Direct loan has a grace period of 6 months before the student must begin repaying the loan. When you take a leave of absence you will not have to repay your loan until the grace period is over. However, when you graduate you may have to begin repaying your loan immediately. Contact your loan servicer for possible extensions to the grace period or other available options.

Where can I get information about Federal student financial aid?

Call the Federal Student Aid Information Center (FSAIC) at 1-800-4-FED-AID (1-800-433-3243) or 1-800-730-8913 (if hearing impaired). This toll free number is run by the US Department of Education and can answer questions about federal programs and applications.

Are work-study earnings taxable?

The money you earn from Federal Work-Study is generally subject to federal and state income tax, but some exemptions may apply. Federal Work-Study earnings during the calendar year are generally included on your tax returns. However, the FAFSA requires you to report the total calendar year work-study earned. This question allows the funds to not be applied to the current year financial aid calculation.

Where can I get a copy of the FAFSA?

The pdf version of the form is available here.

I sent in my FAFSA over  weeks ago but haven't heard anything. What should I do?

If you haven't received a FAFSA Submission Summary, call the Federal Student Aid Information Center at 1-800-4-FED-AID (toll free).
