Your College Journey: Year-by-Year Advising for Success

1. Orientation and Getting Started: Kick off your college journey with a full orientation that introduces you to everything you need: academic resources, campus services, and the advising process. We’ll also have you complete a quick survey to learn more about your interests, strengths, and career goals.

2. Your Assigned Academic Advisor: You won’t have to navigate your first year alone! You’ll be paired with a dedicated academic advisor who will guide you through course selection, time management, study skills, and more.

3. Regular Check-Ins: We will check in with you once a month through email, phone calls, or in-person meetings during your first semester to ensure you are staying on track academically and personally. Together, we will set goals and celebrate your milestones.

4. Peer Mentoring: Learn from students who have been in your shoes! Our peer mentors are experienced upperclassmen who will share tips on managing coursework, balancing campus life, and making the most of your college experience.

5. Workshops and Resources: Take advantage of free workshops on topics like study strategies, exam prep, and time management. Need extra help? We’ll connect you with tutoring centers and success programs to keep you moving forward.

1. Reflect and Set New Goals: Now that you have a year under your belt, it's time to reflect. We’ll help you reassess your academic path and career goals to make sure you're heading in the right direction.

2. Explore Your Options: Thinking about adding a minor? Studying abroad? Landing an internship? We’ll help you explore different academic opportunities that match your interests and future plans.

3. Create Your Personal Action Plan: Work with your advisor to map out a personalized action plan, complete with specific goals and timelines. We’ll check in regularly and make adjustments if needed.

4. Grow Your Professional Skills: Get a head start on your career! We’ll introduce you to résumé writing workshops, interview prep sessions, networking events, and more. Plus, we’ll help you start exploring internships and future job opportunities.

5. Ongoing Support and Advocacy: Your advisor will continue to be your advocate whether you need help adjusting your academic plan, finding resources, or just talking through your options. We’ll also invite your feedback to keep improving the advising experience for you and your classmates.

1. Explore Research and Internship Opportunities Outside FSC: Now is the time to gain experience beyond 51³Ô¹Ï. Research projects and internships off-campus can help you explore career paths and clarify long-term goals.

2. Prepare for Standardized Tests (If Considering Graduate School): Thinking about graduate or professional school? Start preparing for exams like the GRE, GMAT, MCAT, or others early to stay ahead of deadlines.

3. Research Graduate Programs and Career Options: Investigate graduate programs or career paths that interest you. Identify prerequisites, deadlines, and application requirements so you’re ready when the time comes.

4. Build Your Resume and Cover Letter: Work with an advisor to create a strong, tailored resume and cover letter. Highlight your skills, academic experiences, and goals for graduate school or the job market.

5. Network with Professionals: Get involved in internships, research, or student organizations to meet people in your field. Building professional relationships now can open doors in the future.

Meet with Your Academic Department

Your major department must officially verify that you've completed all requirements for graduation. Advisors can help you review your DegreeWorks audit, clarify any outstanding credits, and guide you through the graduation clearance process.

Request Letters of Recommendation & Create a Reference List

Seek out professors, advisors, or professionals you've worked with closely. Advisors can help you identify strong recommenders, guide you on how to ask professionally, and help format your reference list.

Finalize Graduate School and/or Job Applications

Whether you're applying to graduate school or starting your job search, you'll need to prepare several materials. Advisors can review personal statements, help tailor your application materials, and ensure you're meeting important deadlines.

Attend Job Fairs & Network Within Your Field

Engage with potential employers and industry professionals through job fairs and events. Career advisors can help you prepare by practicing mock interviews, reviewing elevator pitches, and highlighting key events to attend.

Complete Your Resume, Cover Letter, LinkedIn & Portfolio

Make sure your professional documents reflect your best self. Advisors can provide feedback on resumes, cover letters, and LinkedIn profiles, and offer tips on organizing your portfolio for specific career paths or grad programs.
